A Simple Supper That Feels Like Home
I remember the smell of salmon sizzling in my grandma’s skillet. It was a cozy, warm kitchen smell. That smell meant a delicious meal was coming. Ever wondered how to make a simple fish dinner feel special? These croquettes are my answer. They turn basic salmon into a crispy, golden treat.
My First Croquette Adventure
My first time making these, I was in a hurry. I forgot to chop the onion small enough. We had some crunchy bits in our patties. It was a funny little surprise. This matters because cooking is about trying, not being perfect. A happy kitchen is better than a perfect meal. What was your last funny kitchen mistake?
Why The Taste Works So Well
The flaky salmon and crispy breadcrumbs create a perfect texture. The red pepper and onion add a sweet, fresh crunch. Paprika gives it a warm, smoky flavor without any heat. Which flavor combo surprises you most, the smoky paprika or the fresh parsley? I love how they all come together. It feels fancy but is so easy to make.
A Bite of History
This dish has roots in many places. People have been making fried fish patties for centuries. They were a smart way to use leftover fish. It became popular in the American South too. *Did you know croquettes are a classic in many coastal towns?* They are a timeless, thrifty meal. Share your favorite family recipe story with me.

Your New Go-To Salmon Croquettes
Step 1 Cook the salmon skin-side down in olive oil. Use low heat for about ten minutes. The fish will flake easily when done. Let it cool slightly before you handle it.
Step 2 Sauté the bell pepper and onion in another pan. Cook them until they are soft. Add the garlic for one more minute. This builds a flavorful base for your patties.
Step 3 Flake the cooked salmon into a large bowl. Discard the skin and any tiny bones. Add the cooked veggie mixture from your skillet. (A hard-learned tip: let the mixture cool before adding the egg).
Step 4 Mix in breadcrumbs, egg, and all your seasonings. Stir everything together until it is well combined. The mixture should be moist but hold its shape. This is the fun, hands-on part.
Step 5 Form the mixture into small patties with your hands. Heat more oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook them in batches until golden brown. Flip them once to cook both sides evenly. What is your favorite dipping sauce for salmon cakes? Share below!

Three Tasty Twists to Try
This recipe is wonderfully flexible. You can easily change the flavors to suit your mood. Here are three simple spins to get you started. They make a great meal feel brand new.Zesty Lemon & Herb: Add two tablespoons of fresh dill and lemon zest.
Spicy Southwest: Mix in a diced jalapeño and use cornbread crumbs.
Smoky Bacon: Stir in a half cup of cooked, crumbled bacon. Which of these spins will you try first? Vote in the comments!
Perfect Pairings for Your Plate
These croquettes are a star on any plate. Serve them with simple, fresh sides for a complete meal. A crisp salad or roasted asparagus works beautifully. For a treat, try them on a soft bun. For drinks, a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc is lovely. A sparkling lemonade is a great non-alcoholic choice. Both cut through the richness of the salmon perfectly. Which would you choose tonight: a fancy plate or a cozy sandwich?
Keep Your Croquettes Tasty
Store leftover croquettes in the fridge for three days. They reheat well in a toaster oven or air fryer. This keeps them crispy. You can also freeze them for a quick future meal. Just place them on a baking sheet first. Then transfer to a freezer bag. My grandkids love when I pull these from the freezer. It makes for a fast, healthy dinner. Why this matters? A ready-to-go meal saves you from expensive takeout. Try making a double batch this weekend. It makes weeknights so much easier.
Fix Common Croquette Troubles
Is your mixture too wet and falling apart? Add a few more breadcrumbs. This will help bind everything. If the patties are burning, your heat is too high. Cook them over medium heat for a golden brown finish. Are they dry on the inside? You might have overcooked the salmon. Remember to cook it on low heat. *Fun fact: Canned salmon works perfectly here too.* Why this matters? Simple fixes ensure your cooking success every single time.
