A Bowl of Unexpected Comfort
I first tasted this dal on a rainy autumn evening. My friend Simran shared her family’s pot. The steam smelled of earthy cumin and sweet apples. One spoonful warmed me from the inside out. Ever wondered how humble lentils could feel so special? This dish answers that beautifully. It turns simple ingredients into a vibrant, comforting meal. The color alone will brighten your day. I knew I needed the recipe immediately.
My First Pink‑Fingered Fumble
My first try was a messy surprise. I forgot to wear gloves for the beets. My fingers were stained pink for two days! The dal still tasted wonderful, though. That taught me a good kitchen lesson. Home cooking is about the result, not perfect hands. Small messes mean you are creating something real. The heart of the meal is what truly matters. Your family will not notice a little color.
Why This Dal Delights
Two things make this dish stand out. The beets give a gentle, earthy sweetness and gorgeous color. The apple adds a fresh, soft crunch in the final minutes. Together, they balance the hearty lentils perfectly. The warm spices tie everything together in a cozy hug. Which flavor combo surprises you most: beet and apple, or cumin and cinnamon? Let’s Make a Cozy, Colorful Dal
This dal is a hug in a bowl. It is bright, healthy, and very simple. You will love the sweet earthiness from the beets and apple. Let’s get your pot simmering.Step 1
Rinse your red lentils under cool water. Peel and dice the beetroots into small pieces. (A hard-learned tip: wear gloves to keep your hands pink-free!). Finely chop one onion and two garlic cloves.
Step 2
Cook onion and garlic in a pan with a little oil for 3 minutes. Add cumin seeds, ground cumin, cinnamon, and turmeric. Stir in the diced beetroot and cook for 4 more minutes. Your kitchen will smell amazing.
Step 3
Add the rinsed lentils and 2 ¾ cups of water to the pot. Bring everything to a lively boil. Then, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Let it cook, uncovered, for about 15 minutes.
Step 4
While that cooks, wash and dice your apple. Stir the apple pieces into the simmering dal. Let it cook for 6 more minutes until thick and soft. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick.
Step 5
Turn off the heat. Season your dal with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Taste it and adjust to your liking. Now it is ready to serve and enjoy. What spice gives this dal its warm, earthy base flavor? Share below!

Make This Dish Your Own
This recipe is a wonderful starting point. Feel free to play with it. Here are three fun spins for your next pot.Savory Herb Twist
Skip the apple. Add a big handful of fresh spinach at the end. Stir in chopped dill or parsley just before serving.
Spicy Kick
Love heat? Add a finely chopped fresh chili with the onions. A pinch of red pepper flakes works great too.
Root Vegetable Medley
Swap one beet for a diced sweet potato or carrot. *Fun fact: this makes the dal even sweeter and richer. Which creative spin would you try first? Vote in the comments!
How to Serve Your Vibrant Dal
This dal is a complete meal with the right sides. I love it over fluffy basmati rice. Warm, buttery naan bread is perfect for scooping. A cool cucumber salad adds a fresh crunch. For drinks, try a crisp lager or a pale ale. The beer cuts the richness nicely. A non-alcoholic ginger beer or mint lemonade is also fantastic. They balance the dal’s warm spices. Which would you choose tonight: rice, naan, or both?
Storing Your Vibrant Dal
Let this dal cool completely first. Store it in the fridge for up to four days. It freezes beautifully for three months. Thaw it overnight in your fridge. Reheat it gently on the stove with a splash of water. My grandkids love finding this ready for lunch. Batch cooking this recipe is a true time-saver. Double it and freeze half for a future busy night. Why does this matter? A ready-made meal stops you from ordering expensive takeout.
Quick Fixes for Common Hiccups
Is your dal too thick? Simply stir in more water until it’s just right. If the flavors seem flat, add a pinch more salt or lemon juice. Did the lentils stick to the pot? You might have needed a bit more water while simmering. No worries, just scrape it up and add that extra water. *Fun fact: Beetroots can stain your hands!* Wear gloves while dicing them. Your Dal Questions, Answered
Is this recipe gluten-free?
Yes, it is naturally gluten-free. Just check your naan bread if you serve it with that.
Can I make it ahead?
Absolutely. The flavors get even better the next day. Reheat it before serving.
What apple type is best?
Use a firm, tart apple like Granny Smith. It holds its shape and adds a nice zing.
Can I swap the beetroot?
Try sweet potato for a different twist. The color will be less vibrant but just as tasty.
How do I scale the recipe?
Double or triple everything easily. Use a bigger pot so it has room to bubble.
A Cozy Kitchen Hug
This dal is like a warm, colorful hug in a bowl. I hope it brings joy to your table. Making it reminds me of my own grandma’s kitchen. Would you try the beetroot or the sweet potato swap? I’d love to see your creation. Share a photo of your vibrant bowl.

Beetroot and Apple Dal Recipe
Description
A vibrant and hearty dal featuring earthy beetroot and sweet apple, simmered with red lentils and warm spices.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils briefly with water, peel and dice the beetroot (wear kitchen gloves if you have them).
- Finely chop the onions and garlic and sauté in a pan with a little water or oil for 3 minutes. Then add the spices (except the salt and pepper) and the beetroot and steam for another 3-4 minutes.
- Add the drained lentils, add 2 ¾ cups of water and bring to a boil. Once the water is boiling, simmer for 13-15 minutes on low heat.
- In the meantime, wash and dice the apple. Add the apple cubes and simmer for another 6 minutes until the dhal has thickened. If it is too thick, simply stir in some more water.
- Season with salt and pepper and lemon juice and serve with (basmati) rice and/ or fresh naan bread.
Notes
- For a creamier texture, you can mash some of the lentils with the back of a spoon before serving.
